Providing Chinese patients the critical health care they need in their own language

With the Coronavirus affecting over 79,000 people globally, healthcare providers around the world are working tirelessly to control the infection from spreading.

The Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) have recently partnered with LanguageLoop, Australia’s leading full service language provider, to bridge the language gap between GCUH staff and their Chinese patients receiving treatment for Coronavirus.

LanguageLoop was able to provide GCUH seven Mandarin interpreters who delivered 24/7 coverage for the entire month of February, significantly assisting the GCUH team in providing the best possible patient care for their Chinese patients under very challenging circumstances.

Gold Coast University Hospital staff have said having LanguageLoop’s on-site interpreters have been integral in helping their Chinese patients in isolation understand their health results and release dates.

Melissa Tobin, a registered GCUH nurse said, “LanguageLoop’s on-site interpreters have been key in helping us provide safe and appropriate care to patients by ensuring we communicate effectively with them.”

LanguageLoop was able to build trust with the patient, and ease their concern by assisting the GCUH team to speak to their patients in Mandarin. This significantly increased the patients’ understanding of their healthcare, enabling them to give informed consent and minimising risk for the hospital.

Benson Lin, one of LanguageLoop’s Mandarin interpreters, said it’s really important patients feel welcome and have someone to help them communicate with their doctors and nurses.

“Patients are relieved when they see a Chinese face and have someone to communicate their health results and when they will be released from hospital. They feel they are really well looked after here,” Mr Lin said.
